Property Location

We are always very pleased when we find quality properties in such good locations as La Sughera. This beautiful wine producing estate - Fattoria Badia DI Morrona - is situated to the south-east of Pisa in attractive rural scenery of gently rolling hills mostly with vineyards and olive groves.

The area is ideal for exploring central Tuscany and Florence, Lucca, Siena, Volterra, San Gimignano are all within easy driving distance as well as the coast at Tirrenia or Livorno and there are ample opportunities for eating out in local restaurants. There is also a good train service from Pontedera if you prefer to have a day out without using your car.

La Sughera is reached up a small country lane (approx. ¾ mile), and consists of two old, carefully refurbished, Tuscan farmhouses. The beautiful old manor house, a few hundred yards from La Sughera, is noted for its historic heritage. From 1100 it was a monastery and in 1482 it became the Episcopal Bishop's See of Volterra. Since 1938 it has been known as Fattoria Badia DI Morrona, an estate extending to a thousand acres, and very well known for its excellent Chianti D.O.C., San Torpe D.O.C., Vino Novello, Vin Santo and olive oil. All guests at La Sughera will have the opportunity to visit the impressive winery at Morrona and the beautiful abbey on the estate.

The white wine "Suvera" is particularly notable and our local wine expert tells us that it is one of the best white wines he has found in this area. You will also be welcome to purchase wine and olive oil at the wine tastings that are arranged at the winery which is in the village. Wine tastings can be booked and paid for locally.

The two old farmhouses which are let exclusively by Tuscan Holidays sit on a picturesque hillside surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. There are lovely views from many of the windows and from the surroundings across the valley and to several hilltop villages in the distance.

The two farmhouses have been carefully divided into five spacious properties - two in one building and three in the other - each having its own entrance and finished to a high standard. All the properties have beamed or vaulted ceilings which are a most unusual feature. They also have terracotta floors, open fires, TV, central heating and are tastefully furnished with antique and rustic furniture. Shared laundry facility.

There is a good swimming pool amid the olive groves and a barbecue/pizza oven which should be the focus of many enjoyable evenings. In the grounds there are walks through the woods, masses of wild flowers and delightful birds including nightingales. Play area for children.

There are five properties altogether at this excellent location where we feel sure you will feel relaxed and able to make the most of your Tuscan holiday.

Notes: We think La Sughera will make an excellent base for a Tuscan holiday whatever time of year you choose. Come in May or June for a quiet break with time to relax and enjoy the ambience of this lovely location and use La Sughera as a base to explore the very heart of Tuscany. September or early October is the time of the grape picking when many villages have their wine festivals to welcome in the harvest.

Morrona, the nearest small village has a bar and a general store for basics. The village is within walking distance being about a mile on a track through the estate (a bit bumpy but suitable for cars). There is a good supermarket at La Capannina on the main road leading to Ponsacco about 4 miles from La Sughera. Tennis and horse riding in the area.

"We spent a glorious week by the pool and all feel that the experience was magical. We feel that the description of the property is understated, we thought it was fantastic. I think you can be assured that we will be travelling with you to Tuscany again, after such impressive service and accommodation." (June 2004)

What the press says

The Sunday Times Travel Section, February 3rd 2008. The excerpt below is from an article by Stephen Bleach.

"Classic Tuscany...for the price of a wet weekend in Blackpool?"

"It can be done: the trick is to go outside peak season and choose your accommodation carefully. Take La Sughera - two Tuscan farmhouses, on a 1,000 acre wine estate 20 miles from Pisa, that have been converted into five apartments. We know, that word makes the heart sink, but these are wonderful, full of charm and smoky smells from the open fireplaces, with thick stone walls, ancient tiled floors, and shuttered windows opening onto an indecently curvy vista of rolling vine-clad hills. The magnificence of Florence, Lucca and Siena is an easy drive away, you can taste the estate's excellent wines, and the pool is terrific."
